Drapery Fabrics: How to Choose the Right One

Linen, cotton, velvet, sheers and more. How each fabric hangs, wears and handles the sun.

The fabric is what you see and touch every day, and it decides how your drapery drapes, how much light comes through and how well it holds up to the sun. Our Spokane Valley showroom has hundreds of drapery fabrics to see by appointment, or we bring samples to your home. Here is how we help clients narrow them down.

More than 5,000 fabrics from Carole Fabrics

Our custom drapery fabrics come from Carole Fabrics, which offers more than 5,000 fabrics plus decorative trims: linens, velvets, textures, prints, solids and sheers. Many of them can also be used for matching pillows, valances and soft shades. Carole's collections are tested for lead and have been free of PFAS (“forever chemicals”) since 2023. We bring a curated selection of samples to your home, chosen for your room and your light, so you only see the fabrics that will really work.

Linen and linen blends

Linen has a relaxed, natural texture and lets soft light through, which is why it's so popular for living rooms and modern farmhouse homes. Pure linen wrinkles and can shift slightly with humidity, so many clients choose a linen blend, which keeps the look with a little more stability.

Cotton

Cotton is versatile and comes in solids, prints and wovens. It takes color beautifully and drapes well. Like other natural fibers it can fade in strong sun, so we recommend a lining on sunny windows.

Velvet

Velvet is rich and heavy, with deep folds that feel warm and quiet. It blocks light and drafts well, which makes it a favorite for bedrooms, media rooms and Spokane winters. Velvet looks best with generous fullness and sturdy hardware.

Sheers

Sheer fabrics soften light and give daytime privacy while keeping the view. They're often layered behind heavier drapery, or used on their own in rooms where you never need it dark.

Silk and faux silk

Silk has a beautiful sheen, but it is delicate and fades quickly in sunlight, so it always needs a lining and works best away from direct sun. Faux silk gives a similar look with much better durability.

Performance and synthetic blends

Polyester and performance blends resist fading, wrinkles and stains better than most natural fibers, which makes them a smart choice for sunny west-facing rooms, homes with kids and pets, and lake houses.

Natural woven drapery

For an organic, textured look, we also offer natural drapery woven from bamboo, reeds, grasses and jute. Because the materials are hand-harvested, every panel is one of a kind. Natural drapery filters light beautifully and pairs well over sheer drapery or sheer shades.

Outdoor drapery fabrics

For covered patios, porches and lake houses, outdoor drapery fabrics are made to resist water, stains, mold, mildew and fading.

Sun, lining and pattern

  • Sunny windows: choose fade-resistant fabrics and add a lining to protect the face fabric.
  • Bedrooms: any fabric can be lined for room darkening or full blackout. See drapery linings.
  • Patterns: large patterns need extra fabric to match the repeat across panels, which affects the price.
  • Wide windows: some fabrics can be run sideways so wide panels have fewer seams.

Designer's Tip

Always look at a fabric sample hanging at your own window, in the morning and in the evening. A color that looks warm in the showroom can look completely different with north light or afternoon sun.
