In Spokane, summer sunrise comes early and winter nights are long and cold, so bedroom windows have a lot of work to do. Here are the drapery ideas our design team recommends most for bedrooms that look beautiful and help you sleep.
Line it for darkness
Any custom drapery can be lined for room darkening or full blackout, so you don't have to give up the fabric you love to get a dark room. See blackout and thermal linings.
Layer drapery over a shade
Drapery alone leaves gaps at the sides and top. A blackout shade underneath blocks the light at the glass, and the drapery covers the edges and adds softness. It's the combination we recommend most for bedrooms. See blackout shades.
Hang it high, wide and close to the wall
Mount the rod well above the window and past the frame on each side so the panels overlap the wall and block light leaking around the edges. A return, where the drapery wraps back to the wall at the ends, helps even more.
Choose calm colors and soft fabrics
Soft neutrals, muted blues and greens, and textured fabrics like linen and velvet make a bedroom feel restful. Velvet adds weight and quiet, and works beautifully with a blackout lining.
Make it effortless
If you open and close your bedroom drapery every day, a traverse rod or motorized drapery makes it easy, and a schedule can open the drapery gently in the morning.
