By [Layla, Lead Designer](https://www.shadedesigngallery.com/our-story.html), and the Shade Design Gallery team · Updated October 25, 2026 Two of Coeur d'Alene's most loved neighborhoods sit right on the water. The Fort Grounds grew up around Fort Sherman, the Army post founded in 1878 where the lake meets the Spokane River, now home to North Idaho College. Sanders Beach lines the lakeshore east of downtown. Both mix older homes with new lakefront houses, and both need window coverings that handle lake light while suiting the architecture. ## Older homes with character For older homes, we choose treatments that keep original trim and window proportions on show: inside-mounted [Roman shades](https://www.shadedesigngallery.com/shades.html#roman), [woven wood shades](https://www.shadedesigngallery.com/shades.html#natural) and [cellular shades](https://www.shadedesigngallery.com/shades.html#cellular), often finished with [custom drapery](https://www.shadedesigngallery.com/drapery.html). Top-down/bottom-up shades give street-side privacy while letting light in from above. ## New lakefront homes New homes on the water often have tall walls of glass facing the lake. [Solar shades](https://www.shadedesigngallery.com/shades.html#roller) cut glare and heat while keeping the view, and [motorized shades](https://www.shadedesigngallery.com/motorization.html) make large and high windows easy to control. ## Privacy near the beach and the trails Lakefront neighborhoods are lively in summer, with walkers, boaters and beachgoers passing by. Light-filtering and privacy shades let daylight in while blocking the view into your home, and layered drapery adds evening privacy. ## Custom drapery by Carole Fabrics For living rooms, bedrooms and the evening, [custom drapery](https://www.shadedesigngallery.com/drapery.html) adds warmth, softness and privacy. Our draperies are handcrafted by Carole Fabrics, with more than 5,000 fabrics to choose from, and can run on a [motorized track](https://www.shadedesigngallery.com/motorized-drapery.html) so even very wide or tall windows open and close at a touch. Layered over a solar or blackout shade, drapery gives you the view by day and a warm, private room at night. ## Free measuring and installation Every project starts with a free in-home design consultation led by Layla, our lead designer, who has more than 20 years of interior design experience. We bring samples to your home, measure every window ourselves and install everything with our own local team. Measuring and installation are free, and most of our products carry a lifetime warranty. ## Designer's Tip In an older home, measure the trim before you choose an inside or outside mount. If the window casing is beautiful, an inside mount keeps it visible; if the frame is shallow, drapery hung above the trim can frame it instead.
